Dear faculty, Among the many efforts UA leaders have worked on this year, we want to take a moment to highlight the work of our legislative committee. Senate bill S.248, the bill to democratize the boards of UVM and Vermont State Colleges, has truly sparked a movement. We’ve made so much progress this legislative session because of the efforts of so many: our UA legislative committee, partners at the state colleges and AFT Vermont, the endorsement of the Faculty Senate, the individual calls and emails to legislators so many of you made. These really made a difference. While it’s still not clear what the bill’s path will be over these next few weeks, United Academics’ legislative committee is feeling confident and proud of the progress we have made on this issue. The UVM administration and their lobbyists have mightily resisted the proposal to add faculty and staff to the Board. This is not surprising from an administration whose every decision reflects a need for maximum control and who acts as ‘management’ rather than ‘leadership’. It’s clear we’ve made them nervous. We need to stand together with our colleagues on staff and graduate students as they organize; we need to resist any intentionally divisive misinformation from the administration, and together we are working to put faculty, staff, and students on UVM’s Board of Trustees.
