The new legislative session starts in just a few weeks. We now have bills drafted in the Vermont House and Senate and bill sponsors in each chamber: Sen. Cheryl Hooker and Reps. Tiff Bluemle and Gabrielle Stebbins. This bill would create seats for faculty and staff on the UVM and Vermont State Colleges Boards of Trustees. Here is more background on the issue of UVM's undemocratic decision making and reckless leadership over the past several years: https://www.unitedacademics.org/democratizebot Vermont legislators generally hear only a manufactured narrative from the UVM administration. Our state representatives and senators have made it clear that they need our help getting our issue onto committee agendas. We need to convince them to hear faculty and staff testimony on the damaging effects of UVM leadership having no accountability or accessibility to the faculty and staff. Now, we need faculty, staff, and students to pressure legislators to democratize UVM’s Board of Trustees. Please take a minute to send a message to the chairs of the House and Senate Education committees. You can state your support for including faculty and staff on UVM’s Board of Trustees, or better yet, describe your personal experience with UVM’s undemocratic, chaotic approach to governance.
