Dedication

Will Miller, 1940-2005This page is dedicated to Will Miller (1940-2005), a life-long fighter in the struggle for peace and social justice who taught in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Vermont for 35 years. Will recognized the need for a faculty union at UVM long before it became a reality. He was instrumental in the effort to get the faculty placed under the jurisdiction of the Vermont Labor Relations Board and to clarify UVM's status as a public institution. [Click here to continue.]

Salary and Compensation Tables: Comparisons with other Institutions

Tables 1-8 show how average UVM salaries and compensation compare to 20 institutions that UVM's Administration has labeled as our public peers, public aspirants, or private competitors (our "comparables"), once cost of living differences have been taken into account. The data used to produce Tables 1-8 are in Appendices 1 and 2. Original sources for listing institutions comparable to UVM, average salaries and compensation for UVM and the other institutions, and cost of living adjustments may be found in the tables or appendices.

The message from these adjusted salary and compensation comparisons is clear:

- UVM's average salary is $23,500 less than the average salary of comparables (UVM rank is 18th out of 21).

- UVM's average compensation is $28,000 less than the average compensation of comparables (UVM rank is 17th out of 21).

Continuing to adjust for cost of living, UVM salary and compensation are below the average of the comparison institutions at every faculty rank:

- The average UVM salary deficit ranges from $11,800 (Assistant Professor rank) to $24,200 (Full Professors).

- The average UVM compensation deficit ranges from $14,400 (Assistant Professor rank) to $30,600 (Full Professors).

UVM's rank order continues to be low, ranging between 15th (Assistant Professor compensation) and 17th (Associate Professor salary) out of 21 schools.
